The Met Gala 2017

The Met Gala is inarguably fashion’s biggest night, where actresses, models, and athletes  go the extra mile to wear dresses or even outfits they wouldn’t dare to wear otherwise. Honoring unconventional fashion designer Rei Kawakubo. This year’s theme was “Rei Kawakubo & Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” where eccentric and avant-garde looks dominated (for better or worse) the red carpet.

The showstoppers:

Rihanna in Comme des Garçons.

Wearing the honored designer, Riri managed to top her infamous 2015 Met Gala Guo Pei gown. As we expected nothing less from her, Rihanna was the talk of the night with this perfect interpretation of “Fashion is art”.

Definitely the risk taker of the night but the whole ensemble is confusing. Katy Perry looks miserable and trapped inside a red cage.

The best dressed:

Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger

Gigi made Avant-Garde sexy in a nude tulle dress by sportswear designer Tommy Hilfiger with yes, a leg pop!

Cara Delevingne in Chanel

Nobody rocks a suit on the red carpet better than Cara Delevingne. This sleek, shiny and sexy evening suit is everything and that pixie hair-do is such a clever accessory!

Zendaya in Dolce & Gobbana

In this tropical print full ball skirt, Zendaya is the epitome of romanticism.

As stunning as she looks (I mean when doesn’t she?) this dress is almost too “common” or “typical” for Blake. I would’ve loved for her to have raised the bar last night and show a bit more creativity. This isn’t Cannes after all.

Although both dazzling dresses, I’m not sure how they fit the theme… Both dresses seem more appropriate for a Gatsby theme than an homage to Kawakubo.

The past couple of years we’ve seen Selena Gomez transition from “good girl” to a more sexy and mature woman. But last night’s choice of dress was a deception. Although nothing wrong with the aesthetic of the dress, Selena looked too “sweet”.  Gomez’ dress lacked the boldness that usually accompanies her on the red carpet, but her daring makeup more than makes up for this.

From Football to Fashion

Football, (soccer to Americans) is called “the world’s sport” and “the beautiful game”. As football players gain celebrity status, it is no wonder that they become supermodels or brand ambassadors to some fashion brand. Since the days of Pele, the world has looked at football players not only for the latest in style but also for inspiration. As the worlds of sports and fashion have been intertwining over the years, it can be said that football and fashion go hand in hand.

Some of the most popular players have their own clothing line or have a collaboration with fashion brands. We’ve all drooled (hopefully just us girls) at Cristiano Ronaldo’s underwear line CR7 and David Beckham’s collection with H&M. Following their footsteps at only 28 years old, is our very own Donald Guerrier, left midfielder of Haiti’s national football team.

After opening a store in Poland last year, Donald Guerrier opened a second store this March in the city of Alnyaspor Turkey where he is currently residing and playing for the Alnyaspor football club. His newest 77 Collection showcases his latest designs in sports and casual wear.

I’ve had the chance to meet and talk to Donald regarding his new 77 collection, and here is what he had to say:

FA: What does fashion mean to you and how did you get from playing football to having your own clothing line? What inspired you to have a clothing line?

Fashion means a lot to me, I love clothes in general and Cristiano Ronaldo is my favorite soccer player, and my inspiration in both football and fashion. The idea of having my own clothing line came from my mom. She pushed me to have my own line and together we came with brand name DG 77 at first, and eventually changed it to 77 Collection (pronounced 7 to 7) as 7 is my number.

FA: Do you design your own collection?

Yes they are my own designs, I designed the collection myself. And it’s taken me some time to come with the perfect name 77, to make it simpler and nicer.

FA: Does your Haitian heritage influence your designs?
Euhh… Not really, only my mom  gave me some ideas for my collection, but my Haitian heritage does not really influence my designs.

FA: What kind of material do you use for your collection?
I’m using 100% cotton

FA: What is your favorite piece in this collection?
*laughs* Actually I don’t have a favorite one, I love all of them!

FA: How often do you plan on releasing a new collection?
Every two weeks we have new styles and new designs coming

FA: How would you describe your personal style?
I like complicated clothes, distressed clothes to be exact. I like T-shirts with holes in them that look destroyed.

FA: What is your favorite item of clothing? And what’s a must have in your closet?
T-shirts and jackets! In my closet I must have white T-shirts, I love white T-shirts.

FA: What are your future plans? Are you planning to open another store somewhere else?
I’m planning to open a store in the U.S. I’m working towards that because a lot of people from the U.S are interested in my designs.

FA: Would you want to work on a line for women as well?
Yes I am thinking about it a clothing line for women, it is in my future plans and also kids’ clothes

FA: Are we going to see any of your collections in Haiti?
Yes, last year I brought my collection to Haiti but it wasn’t as successful back then but it is in my plan to bring my designs back to Haiti and eventually open a store in Haiti.

Adidas Originals X Pharrell Drop “Pink Beach” Collection

Hip-Hop icon Pharrell Williams teams up once again with German giant Adidas to launch the Spring/Summer 2016 collaboration “Pink Beach”.

Pharrell’s passion for arts, music, and fashion comes to life just in time for Summer with this new collaboration of footwear and apparel.

Distinguished by vibrant colors and inspired by tropical prints and island vibes with doodles and words created by Pharrell himself, the Pink Beach collection includes a selection of tanks, leggings, swimsuits, jackets, and ponchos for men, women, and kids.

The footwear collection is an adaptation of the classic Adidas Stan Smith remodeled for the beach. Using molded nubuck heels and patched-tape uppers, the Elastic Slip On and Lace Up kicks are available in white as well as cool colors such as bright blue and sand grey.

The first part of the collection dropped on May 5th, with the second part released this past Thursday. Pink Beach is available at the Adidas online store and retailers.

Le Get Away in Fort Alexandre

Ditching the usual little black dress and heels, girls, as well as guys put on their sneakers and jackets on Saturday night and headed to Nocterm’s hill top party in Fort Alexandre, located 45 minutes from Petion-Ville.

After a year of hiatus, Fashion Ayiti decided to come back and capture Haiti’s fashion, style and what better way to start back than at a hill top party with a mesmerizing view of our city.

Needless to say that the most common trend on Saturday were sneakers. From men to women can I just say shoe game on point?

A surprising but very approving trend was faux fur and fringe vests amongst the ladies.

Met Gala 2015

They don’t call it the Oscars of Fashion for nothing! This year the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala’s theme was “China: Through the looking glass”. Although only some managed to understand the theme, here is what we saw at the Met Ball last night:

 

The Show Stoppers:

Talk about making a statement! No other way to describe Riri’s Guo Pei gown? train coat?

After making photographers and fans waiting until the last minute, Beyonce arrived and did nothing less than steal the show for herself. Wearing a very sheer and embellished Jewel gown from Givenchy, queen Bey out-shined Rihanna, Kim K and everyone else.

 

Best Dressed:

Ever since her marriage with George Clooney, Amal Clooney has been wowing us with her regal look and elegance. This Met Gala was no exception.

Meet The New VS Angels

Sarah Jessica Parker Launches Shoe Line

All of us girls have dreamt about having Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe collection. We’ve all gone through pinterest looking for pictures of our dream SATC shoe closet. Well it seems like that dream can now become reality with Sarah Jessica Parker launching her very own shoe line.

Yes you heard it right a shoe line by the very own Carrie … I mean Sarah Jessica Parker.

For months now the fashion world has been buzzing about SJP’s shoe collection worthy of Carrie Bradshaw. Partnering with Manolo Blahnik’s CEO George Malkemus, her shoes range from $195-$485. SJP’s collection is available at Nordstrom which includes 25 made in Italy shoe style (each with a name), three handbags and a trench coat.

Haiti Fashion Week 2013

On Wednesday evening, a red carpet greeted international guests, media, and a fashion savvy crowd for the opening gala of the second edition of Haiti Fashion Week with the theme “Mod’ifions notre environment”. After the usual long welcoming speeches, Haitian singer Luck Mervil opened the show with an interpretation of je t’aimais, je t’aime et je t’aimerai while stilt walkers dispersed throughout the crowd. Soon after, we assisted what was really an extravaganza show in which our Haitian designers each presented their muse in an eco-friendly costume made with cereals, corn, natural flowers, goat skin and all kinds of junk recycling.

Day 1: “Beach and Sun”

It is Thursday evening at the Karibe Hotel, and as expected, the show is running late. Designers, stylists and makeup artists are finishing their last minute touch up on the models. At 8:45, the theme song of Haiti Fashion Week silences the anxious public while young girls wearing Jacqueline Francis’ creation open the show.

Throughout the rest of the evening, we saw the clothing and accessory lines of designers Jean Yves Marchand, Gaelle Nerette, Farah Pierre Louis, Tamara Depestre, Cora Sajous, Melissa Etienne, Nora David and Daphne Floreal.

Day 2: “Casual”

Friday nigh at the Karibe Convention Center, all models, (international and local) are wearing wigs from Bijoux Hair. At 8:30 PM, they walk down the white catwalk modeling the casual wear creations of designers such as: Grégory Vorbe and his t-shirts displaying creole messages; Harry Lafond, Sonia Noël, Watson Saint Louis, Malou Cadet, Michaelle Baussan, Irilene Geffrard, Marie Therese Fouchard, Daphne Stephenson, Gerry Romain, Christelle Paul, and Verona School of Fashion.

Day 3: “Evening and Cocktail”

Finally the last and most anticipated day has arrived. Since 7:30 a long line is being formed by impatient guests waiting to go inside. Finally at 8, the doors open and the seats are quickly taken.

Opening the show is Dominican designer Jenny Polanco with her white cotton and linen collection. Following her were Haitian designers: Madeline Ledan, Mario Andresol, Musset payant, Miko Guillaume, Maelle David, Maguy Durcé, Phelicia Fell, Michel Chataigne, Creations Dorées’ accessories, Oberti luxury eye wear from Argentina, and Esther Joseph from Saint Lucia.

Most designers received applauds and stand ups from the pubic but only two designers left the public in awe. Fauvette Nartco from Paris surprised us with an impressive exhibition of urban chic menswear. As the lights turned off, about a dozen of male models aligned themselves on the catwalk and one by one advanced the catwalk. To end the night, Haitian-Canadian designer Helmer Joseph made a tribute to the Holy Mary with a lace short piece and Ave Maria playing as soundtrack. In addition, his collection included bold colors and geometric prints with a captivating black final piece.

Although the overall organization of this year’s event surpassed that of last year’s, many issues need to be taken into more serious consideration. A lack of professionalism in the modeling was somewhat evident as models struggled to find the right rhythm and timing regarding their runway walk. In addition, presenting twelve designers per night is too much. A more strict selection on the participation of the designers should be enforced.  Some designers fail to incorporate the aesthetics to their designer’s collection while others remain limited with their choice of fabric and textiles due to the limited resources available to them.

Granted, some designers have shown merit, but some still lack the originality and competence to partake in this event, and are therefore clouding the little good that results. I believe a show with less designers would create more opportunity for our already talented designers to shine even more

Met Gala 2013 “PUNK: From Chaos to Couture”

With a different theme every year, and hosted by fashion magazine Vogue in New York City, the Met Ball or Met Gala is the fashion world’s best red carpet event with an exclusive guest lists of stars, models, designers, and Hollywood’s A-list.

This year, the theme Punk: from Chaos to Couture added more edge to the gala event with celebrities wowing us with leather, lace, studs and even punk hairdo and make-up. This is what happens when Punk meets Couture … Can anybody say AWESOME?!

THE BEST DRESSED:

Nina Dobrev looked stunning in a black Monique Lhuillier gown.

Rooney Mara, breathtaking in this Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy. The combination of lace and zipper gave it the perfect sexy edge twist.

Emma Watson looking impeccable as always in Prabal Gurung. Hermione who?

Emmy Rossum in a plunging V-neck Donna Karan Atelier sequin gown.

The 23 year old Taylor Swift threw away her usual romantic look and pulled off a more daring J Mendel edgy dress with a beaded neckline. Now if she could only write something as grownup as her look…

THE DECEPTION:

Gwyneth Paltrow in a hot pink gown by Valentino. I think she could be a little sexier, especially after that great fighting scene in iron man 3. Her abs were rock solid, so she can pull off wearing less.

Kerry Washington in Vera Wang. The leather glove is very sexy but the combination of gloves, lace, and floral print dress is a little too much.

Elle Fanning in Rodarte. Not a big fan of the full Tye-die skirt … Like other critics have said, it looks like she just came back from summer camp.

Chloe Sevigny in Proenza Schouler. A bit deceiving and boring for a fashionista.

THE SHOW-STOPPERS:

We added this category to highlight some of the celebrities that managed to catch our full attention, whether it be good or not so fabulous.

Beyonce in Givenchy. This may not be her best dress but Queen Bee looks literally like she’s on FIRE!

Katy Perry was definitely out there from her crown, to her cross-shaped earrings to the thousands of beads featured in her Dolce & Gabanna dress making up a religious design from the mosaics of Sicily’s cathedral.

Madonna in Givenchy. With just fishnet stockings and no pants on, Madonna arrived on the red carpet leaving us all in astonishment as usual.

And of course style icon Sarah Jessica Parker in a gorgeous abstract print gown by  Giles Deacon and with PhillipTracy head piece that had us all stop and stare.

WTF moment:
KIM!!!!! I wish I didn’t have to be rude, but come on! There was nothing remotely okay about this dress. Pregnant women glow, but even that couldn’t save this travesty. Guess it’s another way for this sister to steal the spotlight …

PUNK BEAUTY:

ROONEY MARA pulled her hair slick back with a clear complexion, big strong brows and bold dark lips.
JENIFER LOPEZ looking fierce with her pompadour hair style, smokey eyes, and natural glowing skin.

Beyonce for H&M

BEYONCE KNOWLES: THE NEW FACE OF H&M.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Beyonce would be partnering with H&M. The singer features in the Swedish retailer’s summer collection modeling a couple of bikinis and beachwear adding her personal touch of glamour and drama to the brand.

The shoot took place at the beginning of the year in the Bahamas and adverts will be launched in both prints and billboard images as well as a television commercial featuring her new song Standing On The Sun.

TOMS Haiti Artist Collective

“Before, I was cutting metal but I had to focus on painting after the death of my father to help my family. I’ve been painting for five years and I want to paint more and more.” Haitian artist, Norelus MacKenly, 18.

Philanthropic shoe brand TOMS, known for its One for One principle that matches every purchased pair with a new pair of shoes donated to a kid in need, took this time a different approach by commissioning 30 Haitian artists to design a limited edition of TOMS shoes.

The project behind this initiative is to support the recovering country by creating jobs for these 30 artisans with the collaboration of Haiti-based Caribbean Craft , an organization dedicated to work with Haitian artisans.

In addition, it gives the artists the opportunity to show and express to the rest of the world  their cultural visions while portraying the Haitian scenery, community and life-style on the footwear.

The shoes, which are individually hand painted by local artists between the ages of 18 to 45 in a Haiti based TOMS atelier (workshop) will be available for both women and men for a price of $68.00 at the TOMS website or US flagship store.

Haiti Fashion Week 2012

Event: Haiti Fashion Week 2012.

Location: Karibe hotel.

Purpose: Stimulate and showcase the Fashion World of Haiti.

For the first time in history, Haiti proudly introduced its first Fashion Week from November 8 to November 11, where thirty designers showcased their collections. Also known as “ModAyiti 2012” in creole, this special event was created by the Haitian Center for Support and Promotion of Enterprises (CHAPES) and the Haitian Network of Designers (HAND), two associations working to develop the Haitian Fashion Industry. Funded by the Ministry of Culture and the European Union’s support program ARCADES, this event gave our local designers a chance to be noticed by the international eye thanks to the presence of international designers, guests and press.

Decor & Set-up

As we entered the Karibe Convention Center we were immediately transported into another atmosphere: Elaborate white draping covered the ceiling and walls, and white chairs were laid out to align the also white catwalk.
Ushers greeted us at the door and brought us to our seats while the pleasant beat of the Haiti Fashion Week 2012 theme song played in the background.

The Event

The program of Haiti Fashion Week 2012 included a forum during the day on the development of fashion in Haiti, and an exposition of items for sell by the designers after each show. The opening ceremony last Thursday was a welcoming celebration for the designers and the organizers of this event with a tribute and homage to the Haitian culture and history. The celebration ended last Sunday with a Haitian folkloric dance with colorful costumes.

Scheduled to start at 7 PM, it was not a surprise to see the shows start an hour late while the public preferred to mingle in the courtyard with drinks and cocktails. An intermission of 15 minutes took place each day, and the shows were a little too long lasting almost 3 hours. It is Fashion after all, and Fashion is fast paced.

We saw it all: beach attire, casual look, suits, cocktail and evening dresses. More than 2 dozen designers took part in this show to exhibit their creations. Native names such as David André, Michel Chataigne, Maelle David, Marie Thérèse Hilaire, Miko Guillaume, Marjorie Alexis (to name a few) shared the runway with international designers coming from the Caribbean, USA, Argentina and Japan.

Culture and heritage are at the heart of every designer in Haiti and are proudly reflected through their collections. However, it seems that the focus on culture was taken too seriously. We believe that more initiative and risk should be taken by our designers in order to push the envelope when it comes to the individuality, cohesiveness and aesthetic of their designs.

Our island is known for its beautiful craftsmanship thus making accessories our forté. Models carried the works of many jewelry, bags, and sandal designers like Phelicia Dell (vèvè bags), Créations Dorées, Gerry Romain, Savannah Savary …

The project beyond ModAyiti goes as far as creating an atelier for our local designers and hopefully opening a store in New York selling Haitian products and clothing. The world of fashion is no longer dormant in Ayiti, and this project led by Maguy Durcé marked its awakening.

Nearly 30 models carried the designers’ collections down the runway 10 of which were international. While some were too fast, others like international Haitian model Nayeli Fanfan among others (see below pictures) made their way down the runway with the perfect modeling grace and attitude. Reigning miss Haiti International Anédie Azael brieftly joined the modeling team.

                           

Male models appeared shirtless and some with paintings on their faces to showcase some designers jewelry collections.

                                

A group of 20 Haitian and 10 international models, stylists and makeup artist were part of the team that made Haiti Fashion Week possible.

Who would have thought that a country who has suffered so much from recent natural disasters would one day hold it’s very own Fashion Week? Surely a lot of work needs to be done but thanks to ModAyiti and its team, we hope to make this event an annual rendez-vous.

Champagne Bridal Show

Last Friday, Champagne, Haiti’s exclusive Bridal and clothing store, showcased its new Collection of evening and wedding gowns.

Putting on a Fashion Show is nothing new for the Gardere sisters (store owners); they even make it look easy! These women are true fashion pioneers and are always open to fun and innovative projects.

This time, rather than putting on a show for a large crowd, they decided to keep it intimate with an audience of selected clients, wedding planners and few media.

The models graced down the catwalk with selected items from Alexia Admor, Tadashi Sohji, ML Monique Lhuiller, Jovani and Nicole Batki.

It’s the Primetime Emmy Awards Best and Worst…

The Primetime Emmy Awards Ceremony is one of Hollywoods biggest events… From SNL‘s Tina Fey to Mad Men‘s buxom Christina Hendricks, anyone who is anyone is invited

The Emmy Awards had some very clear trends going on… The least expected was the plethora of yellow gowns, as yellow is rarely the most flattering color. The curvy bombshells showed off their curves, and some even showed their very pregnant curves (Congrats to the lovely Clare Danes). In a nutshell, the Emmy Awards was as always, a star studded event that flaunted the best and worst of fashion.

FOR THE WORST:

5) Amanda Peet looks washed out in the nude gown. Unfortunately the fit isn’t any better… She looks a little shapeless. How unfortunate…

4) Glenn Close is also a miss I’m afraid. The pattern is odd, which isn’t necessarily bad but it’s quite unflattering.

3) Julianna Margulies wears a Giambattista Valli gown. The print is a reminiscence of 18th century french chateau curtains… It doesn’t seem very inspired now does it?

2) Ashley Judd‘s Carolina Hererra is too pink, too shiny. The fabric does not feel chic enough for the red carpet.

1) Julianne Moore in Christian Dior. I love Julianne Moore, but the big Canari yellow dress is so wrong for her complexion and hair color… It’s a little Big Bird from Sesame street.

And our Faves of the night are…

5) Kat Dennings looks anything but broke in this gorgeous maroon J.Mendel. The dress fits her curves like a glove.

4) Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier. The Once upon a time star looks very avant garde in this vibrant number.

3) Emily VanCamp in J.Mendel is perfection. The soft grey of the gown offsets her complexion nicely. Love!

2) Kelly Osbourne wears a purple Zac Posen gown and looks so chic. I love how her hair compliments the gown… As for the lips… Always a fan of plum!

1) And the winner is… Julianne Hough in a Swarovski crystal embellished Georges Hobeika gown. Nothing looks better on a blond than blue, and this aqua gown is stunning and dramatic… So Emmy Worthy.
